DECLARATION

Declaration

The Declaration of Faith—known in Arabic as the Shahada—is the first and most fundamental of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a simple yet profound statement that expresses the essence of a Muslim’s belief and forms the foundation of Islamic faith.

What is the Shahada?

The Shahada is the statement:

“There is no god but God (Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.”

By sincerely affirming this declaration, a person enters the faith of Islam. It reflects two core beliefs:

  • The oneness of God (Tawheed)—that there is only one, unique, and incomparable Creator
  • The prophethood of Muhammad, who conveyed God’s message to humanity

Why is it important?

The Shahada is more than just words—it is a commitment that shapes a Muslim’s entire worldview and way of life.

Foundation of Faith
It defines what it means to be a Muslim, forming the basis for all other acts of worship.

Clarity and Simplicity
The message is clear and direct, emphasising a personal relationship with one God without intermediaries.

Guidance for Life
By accepting the message brought by the Prophet Muhammad, Muslims look to his example for guidance in how to live with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

How is it practiced?

Unlike other pillars, the Shahada is not performed at set times—it is a belief that is constantly affirmed in the heart and expressed in daily life. It is:

  • Recited during daily prayers
  • Whispered into the ear of a newborn
  • Often among the last words spoken at the end of life

For those embracing Islam, sincerely declaring the Shahada is the first step in their spiritual journey.

A welcoming perspective

For non-Muslims, the Shahada offers insight into the simplicity and depth of Islamic belief. It emphasises monotheism, accountability, and a direct connection with the Creator.

At its heart, the Declaration of Faith is about recognising one God and choosing to live a life guided by that belief—bringing meaning, direction, and unity to a Muslim’s life.
